The First “Why”

My real estate mentor is Brian Buffini. He’s fond of saying, “Know your Why.”

I also belong to a Realtor® Facebook Group where we’re able to share our thoughts and ideas about working with clients, other agents and those supporting the real estate business in a spirit of cooperation instead of competitiveness. The other day, the moderator of the group posed the following question:

“Be honest why are you in real estate?”

The responses were those that you’d typically expect. Flexible Schedule, Being Your Own Boss, Helping People …

Of 68 responses, mine got the most *Likes*. Ok, so it’s still a little bit competitive :-). Anyway, it’s empowered me to share my story with you.

I had a very bad home buying experience as a young soldier while on active duty in the Army. I had found the most perfectly quaint little cottage, white picket fence and all, in Historic Occoquan Virginia outside Ft Belvoir. Made an offer (through the listing agent) that was accepted by the Seller. A higher offer came in after mine and the Seller cancelled my offer in favor of that one. Found out shortly thereafter that it wasn’t legal or ethical for the Seller and his agent to have done so. Heartbroken, I decided to take the real estate licensing course so that I’d know what “they” knew, committed to this never happening to me again. This decision ended up being a post-militiary career move 10 years later. And I think that’s why I love working for first time and military home buyers so much – keeping that bar set so high that they will never be satisfied with any other Realtor®. To use a military term – I’m a “Lifer”. #clientsforlife

As my business has grown, so have my “whys.” I will always remember how this first one made me feel, though.  The sale or purchase of a home is personally unique. It is often an emotional experience, but should never cause a moment of angst, nor a sleepless night. This is my professional commitment. My clients are not transactions and each of them will always be respected as my most important client. I am thankful for their business and honor their trust in me.
